Jolly Phonics Project in Sierra Leone

Our Jolly Phonics Project in Sierra Leone is executed in collaboration with the Teaching Service Commission (TSC). The flagship literacy project was inaugurated in Sierra Leone on 15 August 2019 at the Shangri La Event Centre, Aberdeen, Freetown and the TSC has since supported and encouraged the spread of the project to 10 districts in the country. This is due to the noticeable improvement the method has on pupils’ literacy skills, and the eagerness it engenders amongst pupils, teachers, parents, paramount chiefs, and host communities. Added to this, is the enormous support and motivation from the Ministry of Education, TSC, Chairmen and District officials, councillors and other stakeholders before and during the time of pilot and rollout programme.

Jolly Phonics project in the country was divided into two phases and since the commencement of the programme in 2019, 4135 government school teachers and other government officials have received 2 days training in Jolly Phonics method under phase one. In consultation with partners and stakeholders, we plan to hold the third day of Jolly Phonics training (phase two) for all teachers and head teachers that participated in the rollout trainings in 10 districts in the month of February 2020.
