Jolly Phonics Project in Nigeria
The Jolly Phonics Project in Nigeria is implemented in four of the 36 States in the country under the partnership between the States Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Institute of Learning and Skill Development (ILSD), which is supported by Optimalpath Consulting Limited (OCL), UK and Jolly Learning. Within one academic year that the program was conducted in Nigeria, 14,706 people including Primary 1 teachers, headteachers and other government officials were trained directly on the Jolly Phonics method and about 337,750 pupils’ lives were impacted as their English literacy skills improved tremendously. The projects were conducted in two phases in each of the States as shown below:
State of Osun
ILSD in partnership with Jolly Learning and OCL, UK commenced the implementation of the Jolly Phonics Literacy Improvement Project in the State of Osun in May 2016. As in other States, outstanding teachers were identified and given additional training as Jolly Phonics Ambassadors during the refresher training. These Jolly Phonics Ambassadors were able to cascade training to their colleagues in the State and in the academic year 2016 – 2017 alone, 5,204 teachers in Grades 2 - 4 received cascaded Jolly Phonics training from Jolly Phonics Ambassadors. This makes the number of teachers and pupils that benefited from the program in the State to be 7,178 and 98,700 respectively.
